Wordlings

Coming soon to the App Store

Words grow when they keep coming back.

Wordlings gives children aged 9 to 11 a short daily mission on iPhone and iPad: a handful of new words, then quick games that bring each one back just before it would be forgotten.

Picture Pop says the word out loud.

Why vocabulary, why now

Between 9 and 11, the books get harder and the words get bigger.

School reading starts to use words children rarely hear at home. A word met once in a book is easy to forget. Words stick when they come back on later days and your child has to remember them, not just recognize them.

The usual problem

  • A spelling list learned for a test is easily forgotten a week later.
  • Many learning apps lean on ads, streaks and coins to keep children tapping.
  • Apps pitched at “kids” often feel too young for a 10-year-old.

What Wordlings does instead

  • A few new words a day, chosen for your child's level.
  • Each word comes back in games on later days, just before it would slip away.
  • Plants in the word garden grow only when a word is remembered, never for time spent.
Meet a word: a picture, a simple meaning, a friendly voice.

How it works

One short mission a day.

  1. Set it up together

Choose your child's age group and a voice. A quick, optional word check finds where to start, and words your child already knows are skipped.

  2. Meet today's words

A handful of new words, each with a picture or a simple meaning, a friendly voice and an example sentence.

  3. Play to remember

Quick games bring back the words your child is learning, on the days they need it. Every word remembered grows in their word garden.

The games

Six short games, each practicing a word a different way.

Picture Pop

Hear a word and tap its picture.

Echo Ears

Hear a sentence and find the word.

Name It!

See a picture and find or type its name.

Letter Train

Fill the train with the word's letters.

Gap Quest

Pick the word that completes the sentence.

Word Blitz

A 60-second round to beat your own best score, with powers like 50:50, Freeze and Redo.

Scores only ever compare your child with their own best: no leaderboards, no daily streaks to lose, no coins. Grown-ups can set the game clock to On, Slower or Off. It is off with VoiceOver or Switch Control, and new words are never timed.

Seed: “You met this word.”

The word garden

An honest picture of what your child has learned.

Every word is a plant. It grows when your child shows they know the word better. When a word needs another look, its plant shows a water drop and the word comes back for practice.

  1. SeedYou met this word.
  2. SproutYou knew it on two different days.
  3. BloomYou said the word yourself.
  4. TreeYou remember it well.

Is Wordlings out yet?

Not yet. It is coming soon to the App Store. Sign up for the letter above and we'll tell you the day it arrives.

What age is Wordlings for?

Ages 9 to 11. Five word levels and an optional word check mean the words fit your child, whether they need easier or harder ones.

How long does it take each day?

A few minutes. Each day has one short mission, and you choose how many new words a day.

Does it need the internet or an account?

No. Every feature except purchases and sync works offline. An account is optional and only for keeping progress in step across your devices or bringing it back on a new phone. You sign in with a code sent to your email; there is no password.

What data does Wordlings keep?

Without an account, your child's progress stays on your device. With an account, progress is synced only to keep your devices in step, and your child's name stays on the device unless you choose to share it. The privacy policy lists every item and why it is kept.

What is free, and what is Family Plus?

Free includes the first 15 words of every level and every game and review, for one child. Family Plus unlocks every word for 1, 2, or 3 or more children, monthly, yearly with 7 days free, or once for good. See pricing.

Can I add a school word list?

Yes. In Grown-ups, choose a file with the words, and Wordlings teaches those words first.

Yes. In Grown-ups, set the game clock to Slower or Off. It is off with VoiceOver or Switch Control, and new words are never timed.

American or British English?
